What is TMJ Disorder?

TMJ disorder is the result of issues related to your TMJ and facial muscles, causing chronic pain and difficulties with your oral mobility. When the hinge (TMJ) on either side of your head, at the base of your skull, becomes inflamed, damaged, or overworked, it can make it harder to open and close your mouth. Eating, speaking, and yawning become a struggle, leading to a reduced quality of life.
Symptoms of TMJ Disorder

Not all symptoms will manifest; however, if you notice any of the following for a prolonged period, make sure to call our office:
- Increased jaw pain throughout your face and neck
- Difficulty opening and closing your mouth
- Jaw is clicking or popping
- Jaw becomes locked in the open or closed position
- Earaches
- Frequent headaches
TMJ Diagnosis & Treatment

Diagnosing TMJ requires a thorough checkup from one of our dentists. We can conduct these during regular visits to try to identify symptoms early on. In addition to a visual examination, we’ll also analyze digital images captured by some of our most advanced dental technologies.
If we notice a problem with your jaw joints, we may suggest one or more of the following treatment options:
- Equilibration/Occlusal Adjustments: If you have an uneven bite, we can adjust specific teeth or restorations so that your teeth come together properly and without pain.
- Occlusal Splints: Customized to fit your mouth comfortably, this device encourages proper jaw placement while also reducing enamel erosion caused by bruxism.
