What are Dental Implants?

Anchoring your smile for lasting durability and use is possible with the help of dental implants. Titanium posts that are surgically placed within the jawbone support the custom restoration that visibly restores your appearance. As a highly versatile form of tooth replacement, dental implants can rebuild your smile and boost your confidence so that you can enjoy the results for decades.
The 4 Step Dental Implant Process

Placing dental implants requires four steps: initial consultation, dental implant surgery, osseointegration/abutments, and delivery of the final restoration. Each stage in the process is essential to the overall success of treatment and is further explained below:
- Initial Dental Implant Consultation – One of our implant dentists in Bemidji will evaluate the state of your oral and overall health and use CBCT imaging to determine the density of your jawbone. This will decide whether you need additional treatment or if you can move forward with oral surgery.
- Dental Implant Surgery – Depending on your case, our dentists may be able to place your dental implants in-house. More complex situations may require a referral to an outside specialist. Either way, the appropriate number of posts will be positioned throughout the jawbone to establish the foundation of support for your new teeth.
- Dental Implant Osseointegration/Abutment – After surgery, you will spend time at home recovering and allowing osseointegration to occur. This process can take 3-6 months and involves your implant posts fusing to the bone. When ready, we will place metal abutments on top of each post to ensure your future restoration remains firmly in place.
- Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s) – Whether it’s an implant crown, bridge, or denture that you need, we will have one created so that it looks natural and works normally once it is in place. Your new smile will afford you many great benefits, all of which you can begin to enjoy immediately after your treatment.
Benefits of Dental Implants

There is little comparison between dental implants and dentures except that both options are designed to rebuild incomplete smiles. The benefits of permanent prosthetics as opposed to removable ones can be hard to overlook, especially when you consider:
- Dental implants offer stimulation to the jawbone so that facial collapse and bone loss are less likely to occur.
- Dental implants restore most of your bite force, making it easier to eat all the foods you love.
- Dental implants improve your speech and eating abilities.
- Dental implants are the closest thing to natural teeth in appearance and usage.
- Dental implants lower the risk of systemic issues, like diabetes, osteoporosis, and heart disease.
